Local Native Plants

Composing Together with Local Native Plants (grades 6-8, 9-12)

Students learn about local native plants and how each plant's unique characteristics can relate to musical elements people can use to create new music. Demonstration concert includes performance of "Yerba Buena" and interactive improvisation using a sample plant. For residencies, each student team picks a local native plant to learn about, care for, and be inspired by while they collaborate on a new composition. The plants are introduced by local botanical experts including docents from the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Friends of Sausal Creek. Past favorites include Deer Grass, Ceonothus, and Sticky Monkey Flower. Check Youtube to hear some of the premieres. Offered with or without visiting ensemble.
